From Mparntwe to the World: Akeyulerre Receives International Architecture Award

A Place of Healing, Recognised Globally

We are proud to share that the Akeyulerre Healing Centre has received the 2026 UIA Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Award (New Buildings Medal), an international award presented by the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA).

Selected from 150 entries worldwide, Akeyulerre was named the global winner in the New Buildings category. The award recognises spaces that are welcoming, accessible and inclusive for all, with the jury highlighting Akeyulerre's commitment to cultural safety, dignity, accessibility and connection to place.

While this recognition is exciting, it is about much more than a building.

Akeyulerre was created through the vision, knowledge and leadership of Arrernte people, who have guided the development of the Centre as a place for healing, learning and connection. Every part of the space reflects the importance of culture, community and Country, creating an environment where people feel welcomed, respected and supported.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Susan Dugdale & Associates, whose thoughtful design helped bring this vision to life. Their work has contributed to a space that responds to the needs of community while honouring the cultural values at the heart of Akeyulerre.

This award belongs to the many people who have contributed to the journey of the Healing Centre — our Elders, board members, staff, partners, supporters and community.

Most importantly, it recognises the strength of an Arrernte-led vision and the importance of creating spaces where culture, healing and connection can continue to thrive for future generations.

Mwarre and thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. 🌿

All three have been valued team members at Akeyulerre for several years and are now taking the next step by undertaking this qualification to deepen their knowledge and continue growing within Akeyulerre. CEO, Marli Banks is excited to see them embrace the traineeship pathway and is proud to support their journey of local growth and learning. These new traineeships represent more than just formal qualifications, they embody the Akeyulerre way – “Our Way”, where Arrernte people lead, guided by the wisdom of Elders, and communities are strengthened through culture and knowledge.
